in memoriam

‘…poetry can make an order….where we can at last grow up to that which we stored up as we grew. An order which satisfies all that is appetitive in the intelligence and prehensile in the affections. I credit poetry, in other words, both for being itself and for being a help, for making possible a fluid and restorative relationship between the mind’s centre and its circumference….I credit it because credit is due to it, in our time and in all time, for its truth to life, in every sense of that phrase.’ (Seamus Heaney, Nobel lecture, 1995) – credit for the choice of quotation going to bookishnature

Acum o mie de ani am tradus la cursul de irlandezi al Ioanei Zirra minunăția asta de poezie:

Sloe Gin
Seamus Heaney

The clear weather of juniper
darkened into winter.
She fed gin to sloes
and sealed the glass container.

When I unscrewed it
I smelled the disturbed
tart stillness of a bush
rising through the pantry.

When I poured it
it had a cutting edge
and flamed
like Betelgeuse.

I drink to you
in smoke-mirled, blue-
black sloes, bitter
and dependable.

Mi-e tare ciudă că nu știu unde e, ca omagiu mărunt.

Rest in peace, mr Heaney.
